THE IMPACT OF BEER DRINKING AFTER EXERCISE

It is common practice in Australia that people often enjoy a beer or two after training/games as part of the social enjoyment of local sport. For this reason, a study was conducted to see if there were any negative consequences of drinking a moderate amount of beer post-exercise.

Exercising in the heat causes water and electrolyte loss, and rehydrating afterwards is crucial for recovery.  But how does beer impact the rehydration process after exercise?

The study found that consuming beer after exercise had no negative effects on markers of hydration, muscle damage or inflammation!

It is important to note that only the equivalent of 2-3 standard heavy beers was studied, and water was also consumed afterwards. The negative consequences of alcohol on the human body are well documented, and you should always drink in moderation. Nevertheless, it is certainly nice to know that you can enjoy a few cold ones after exercise without too much concern for your hydration or recovery!
