Why Foot Strength Matters More Than You Think

When people think about lower limb injuries — shin splints, knee pain, Achilles issues, or plantar fasciitis — they often focus on the obvious culprits: weak glutes, tight calves, poor running technique.

But one factor that’s frequently overlooked is foot strength.

Your feet are the foundation of your movement system. With 26 bones and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments, they act as your first point of contact with the ground — absorbing shock, stabilising each step, and helping your body adapt to uneven surfaces.

When those small intrinsic foot muscles aren’t working well, everything above — from your ankles to your hips — starts to compensate.


Common Signs of Weak Foot Muscles

Weakness or poor control in the foot often shows up subtly. You might notice:

Simple Foot Strength Exercises You Can Try Today

  1. Short Foot Exercise (Arch Lift)
    • While standing, gently draw the base of your big toe toward your heel — lifting your arch without curling your toes.
    • Hold 5–10 seconds, repeat 10–12 times per side.
  2. Toe Yoga
    • Lift your big toe while keeping the other toes down, then reverse it.
    • Great for retraining coordination between the intrinsic muscles.
  3. Towel Scrunches
    • Place a towel flat on the floor and use your toes to pull it toward you.
    • Progress by placing a small weight on the towel.
  4. Single-Leg Balance
    • Start with 30 seconds per side.
    • Progress by closing your eyes or standing on a soft surface.
  5. Calf Raise with Foot Control
    • As you lift, focus on maintaining your arch and spreading your toes for stability.
